+: The mural You Belong Here (2017) by Eva Allen, in People’s Park at the corner of East Kirkwood and North Dunn Street, was painted over with the words “Black Lives Matter” on June 19, which is Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. The mural space is a public-private partnership between the city’s Bloomington Arts Commission (BAC) and the owner of the building where the mural resides. BAC has said the mural will remain as-is for the near future.

Peoples Park is the location of the Black Market, a business owned by local African Americans in the 1960s until, in 1968, it was firebombed by members of the KKK.

On July 31, 2020, the Black-Owned Business Affinity Group, part of The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, will install a historical marker from the Indiana State Historical Society to honor Peoples Park and the Black Market.
