biografische angaben: Marius Richters (1878-1955) is one of the most important Rotterdam artists who has captured the pre-war dynamics of the port city in paintings, drawings and prints. As a painter of Rotterdam, Richters achieved his greatest fame with a series of monumental wall paintings that he realized around 1918 in the council chamber of the new town hall. His oeuvre as a glazier also appeals to the imagination. As a Christian artist, he achieved great fame at the time with the production of stained glass windows for the Zuiderkerk, which was totally destroyed during the bombing of 14 May 1940. In Marius Richters' Rotterdam we get acquainted with Richters as a storytelling artist, as a modernist, as a history painter of the heroic working and toiling Rotterdam and finally with Richters as a religious-expressive artist. Also extensively discussed is the panorama of Rotterdam that he drew in April 1940, just before the bombing, from the tower of the town hall. (Bookjacket text of Van der Leeuw, 2005)
