«In 1938, D'Arcy appoached his friend William Rothenstein, the Principal of the Royal College of Art, and his son John, the director of the Tate Gallery, to ask their advice on an English mural painter for the chapel. They both recommended Stanley Spencer as the 'leading religious painter in the country at the time'. When Spencer arrived at Campion Hall D'Arcy was rather taken aback by his appearance and behaviour. […]
D'Arcy decided not to give the commission to Spencer. Thus, upon further discussion with the Rothensteins, D'Arcy invited Charles Mahoney to send some of his works for consideration. D'Arcy was clearly pleased with the examples of work that Mahoney sent, crediting him with a 'wonderful sense of colour'. Perhaps he was also keen to accept Mahoney, believing him to be a Catholic. 'From his name I assumed that he was an Irish Catholic, at any rate by birth, but he proved to be completely ignorant of the Catholic faith, indeed of Christianity, and was an agnostic socialist'. However, D'Arcy was either unconcerned by this or was suitably impressed by Mahoney's skill as a painter to overcome his desire for the work to be done by an Catholic.» (Artmonsky et al., 2013, p. 236)
