Studied at the Boston Museum School, with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts, and with Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He came to Chicago in 1892 and was active in the city as a landscape painter, teacher, lecturer, and critic for the Chicago Sunday Tribune. Sculptor Lorado Taft was his brother-in-law.
