biografische angaben: Born 1948 in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico, Raya came to Chicago in 1964 with his mother, a native of Springfield, Illinois. He said that when he first came to the Pilsen neighborhood, it reminded him of Tijuana and that today it still feels like Tijuana in the 1970s. He took couses at the School of the Art Institute while in high school and later was a scholarship student at Windsor Mountain School in Lenox, Massachusetts. He left school to study in Mexico and joined the student protest movement. Returning to Pilsen, he became a major participant in the local community mural movement and has been a teacher to many of the artists.
